Dom tower and church
The most iconic landmark of Utrecht no doubt is the Dom Tower. With its 112 meters and 32 centimeters it is the highest church tower in the Netherlands.
During an unprecedented storm in 1674 the nave of the church was completely blown away. The now two parts of the church were never rejoined. Today we know both parts as the Dom Tower and the Dom church. Between church and tower nowadays you will find the Dom square. On Dom square red and black stones mark where once stood the walls of the old nave.
If you are in a sportive mood it is possible to climb the Dom tower. It’s quite a feat to reach the top, but after ascending the 465 steps there lies a fine reward: a beautiful view over the city and the region.
